While studying at art college in his late teens, Gil was offered an opportunity to do an internship at Liverpool’s legendary Amazon Studios one summer after which he soon ended up quitting his studies to jump into the recording world with both feet. He fast ended up running the studio’s 8 track facility between 1979 and 1981 which put him in the company of some of Merseyside’s most exciting and emerging talent at that time - post-punk / nu wave bands like China Crisis, Pete Wylie, Dead Or Alive, The Teardrop Explodes and OMD - who did their early recordings there which gave Gil unique opportunities to build his craft at the same time.
His first landmark productions were with China Crisis ('Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms') and then with Echo And The Bunnymen ('Ocean Rain' - proclaimed by Ian McCulloch to be ’the greatest album ever made’) and so influential was the scene that Gil appeared to be immersed in, that it started to bring artists from further afield to him (that and the quality of his work - obviously !). His work with Australian post- punk band The Triffids ( 'Born Sandy Devotional' and ‘[Calenture') in the mid 80s was soon followed by a flow of artists from seminal indie /alt label 4AD’s US acts starting with Throwing Muses ('Throwing Muses’ in 1986 and ‘[Chains Changed' in 1987) and soon extending to three ground-breaking albums for Pixies (‘Doolittle’, ‘Bossa Nova' and 'Trompe Le Monde' - who he also returned to work with in 2014 on 'Indie Cindy').
The scene was set from here and Gil continued to work on some of the most influential and interesting artists both UK and stateside making albums for COUNTING CROWS, BELLY, FEEDER, JAMES, DASHBOARD CONFESSIONAL, THE DISTILLERS, JIMMY EAT WORLD and FOO FIGHTERS- for whom Gil produced two albums, 'The Colour & The Shape' and the grammy-winning, multi-million selling record 'Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace' - over three decades and counting…
His continued work on significant albums worldwide further reinforced his stronghold on all things alt/ guitar gaining him multiple Grammy nominations - making albums for everyone from TWIN ATLANTIC to MAXÏMO PARK, from YOU ME AT SIX to DON BROCO to BAND OF SKULLS, MARMOZETS, BUSTED and many awesome records in between.
After a recent hiatus during which he relocated both his home and his studio to Weymouth, Dorset, Gil returns with an exciting new album for THE HUNNA ‘ The Hunna’ which is out in October 2022.
